Reno, 1961: Edward Thorp, a 29-year-old MIT math lecturer, walked into a casino with ten thousand dollars and a backer with mob ties, and doubled the stake in 72 hours — the first time in history anyone beat a commercial casino with mathematics. Card counting told him his edge; the Kelly formula told him how much to bet.

He then took Kelly to Wall Street: Princeton-Newport Partners ran convertible arbitrage at half-Kelly, and for nineteen years posted seventy-six straight positive quarters — never a losing one. It died not from the market but from an FBI raid that shut it down in 1988.

Thorp's late advice to ordinary investors

"Should you use Kelly? Yes — but half-Kelly or less. Because you don't know your true edge. You think it's 55%; it might be 50%. Everyone overestimates themselves, including me."
